For this Minnesota Employee, Being Amazing Is All about Service.

Meet Wanda Ortiz-Maysonet, a bundle of energy who is at her best when using that energy to help others. Her commitment to service began in 1987, when she started a 10-year stint as a United States Air Force telecom technician, traveling the world to install communications equipment at far-flung USAF locales. After her Air Force career ended, Wanda joined a CommScope predecessor company in 1997, but continued to serve her country as a member of the Minnesota Air National Guard until 2008.

These days, when she’s not working as a proposals manager at CommScope’s Shakopee, Minnesota office, Wanda, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, serves as an interpreter for the Saint Paul Public Schools, interpreting conversations during parent-teacher conferences. Wanda also uses her Spanish-speaking skills as a volunteer with the Cultural Service Unit of the Minneapolis Community Emergency Response Team. When individuals, who speak only Spanish, are in crisis situations, Wanda greatly lessens their fear by serving as an interpreter.

She also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for disadvantaged families; provides free tax preparation services to low-income people to ensure that they understand and receive all of the tax savings available to them; and interprets complex legal documents from English to Spanish for clients who don’t understand English.

“One of the reasons I like to volunteer is I have been very fortunate,” says Wanda. “Right after I got out of the Air Force, ADC Telecommunications (now part of CommScope) believed in me and gave me the opportunity to use the skills I had acquired while in the service.”

Like most people who give of themselves, Wanda gets something valuable in return. “I’ve always been driven to try new experiences, to learn new things and meet new people, and when I can use my skills and enthusiasm to help others, that’s the best feeling of all.”

Keep on being amazing, Wanda!
