Title:  Quality Engineer

General Summary

The Engineer, Quality is a member of a team, the role of which is to implement a unified approach towards Product Development Process, Managing Customer & Internal Quality issues & develop Systems & Controls with the intent to deliver high quality products and services in a manner that meets the high standards held by CommScope.


The Engineer, Quality is responsible for ensuring that the company’s global practices, procedures are communicated and practiced for HELIAX BU. 


This position has cross functional accountability and interactions with Procurement, Product Management, Sales, Risk Management, Operations, Finance, Human Resources, Planning, Distribution and any other applicable areas, in support of improving overall Product Quality.


The person has to be a champion of Quality to both internal and external clients.


They will utilize new methodologies and ways of thinking and be able to resolve the natural differences that exist in an organization.  This includes but is no limited to Design of Experiments (DOE), use of Statistical Process Control (SPC), FMEA’s, TL9000/ISO and Lean Manufacturing.


Must think global & must be flexible & not limit to a specific region alrhough the focus will be on the specific region/location.



The person will be responsible for the quality systems & controls throughout HELIAX supply chain within the region as well as support HELIAX team globally.

Duties & Responsibilities


  • Provide input into a living three-year quality strategy specific to their areas of responsibilities to help drive excellence across all products and align with the overall company Quality organization and implement Quality Assurance industry best practices. This strategy will incorporate the required elements of corporate, business unit, customer and organizations such as Operations, Procurement and Finance.
  • The Engineer, Quality is Responsible for the 3 key areas of quality relating to the design of systems and the critical to Quality (CTQ) elements for HELIAX.
    • Quality Improvement: the purposeful change of a process or product to improve its dependability.
    • Quality Assurance: designed systematic preventative actions necessary to provide confidence that products and services meet given requirements all the time.
    • Quality Control: inspecting and testing efforts to maintain the integrity of a process or product’s.
  • Quality Improvement
    • Responsible for identifying improvement opportunities, provide support with process documentation and metrics identification.
      • Manage and review corporate documentation & ensure compliance.
    • Participate in collaborative cross-functional teams to deliver companywide quality solutions incorporating best practices.
      • Support Global Quality System as a member when necessary
    • Lead and direct local improvement projects, establishing benchmarks and best practices and aligning with overall business goals for areas on responsibility.
  • Review global and regional (Z) reports.  Take corrective actions as required and escalate potential catastrophic events.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Provides input into Corporate requirements and takes action to implement Corporate requirements into the local processes and systems that ensure the establishment and maintenance of a robust quality program into and at all HELIAX sites for which there is responsibility, that comply with all company, local or applicable International Quality Standards, as required.
      • Routinely attending on site audits to verify that global procedure is being followed
      • Create and implement local site internal audit plan to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 standard.
    • Provides input into Corporate requirements and takes action to implement BU and corporate requirements into the Formulation of standard operating procedures to support Quality Management System
    • Responsible for monitoring QA processes to verify that the prescribed methods are being followed for the Supply Chain they are responsible for.
      • Monitor performance as required through reports and taking necessary actions as required.
    • Constant improvement or reinvestment incorporating best practices for a new systems and current system enhancements.
  • Quality Control
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the local quality and assure compliance to all corporate and local policies, as well as compliance with national and international standards and legislation.  Develops, recommends and implements changes as needed based on evaluation
      • Management review meetings in conjunction with ISO 9001 compliance requirement
    • Oversee the duties/functions of assigned areas of responsibility necessary to assure regulatory and accreditation compliance and advises the management on these issues.
      • Take challenging goals & objectives & strive for excellence.
    • Integrates the Audit function into quality improvement projects for plant systems and products
      • Review weekly and monthly reports provided by global and site management to ensure goals and objectives are being met
    • Compliance with testing and inspection procedures.



    • Develop and maintains effective relationship with employees through effective and timely communication.
      • Distribute weekly report of group performance and issues.
      • Support, attend and participate in weekly Global meetings and other meetings as necessary to meet goals and objectives
  • Support, attend and participate in weekly staff meetings in factories as scheduled


    • Maintain a level of knowledge, appropriate to job level, of internal systems in order to provide support to HELIAX Quality.
  • Customer Focus
    • Provide input to develop systems and processes to meet or exceed customer requirements. Implement those approved.
    • Develop effective communication methods
    • Responsible for the development of QA metrics and targets for each product and as part of a cross-product initiative to assure all products work independently and together in a high quality manner.(Product/Service requirements of Customer)
    • Takes initiative and action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding quality issues with all customers (Internal and External) in a timely manner.


  • Other: Must be willing to travel.
    • Include demonstrated competencies and physical, mental, & interpersonal skills.

    • Work experience of a statistical, engineering, or technical background.
    • 10 plus years of experience, preferably from Optical Fiber Industry.
    • Proven ability to collaborating & leading.
    • Intimate familiarity with ISO9000/TL9000 Quality Systems with implementation or other applicable professional experience.
    • Working knowledge of basic and advanced Quality tools such as; TQM, FMEA, DOE, Six Sigma, SPC, FMEA, Control Plans, Root Cause Analysis, Poke Yoke, Kaizen Lean Manufacturing etc. Preferably a Blackbelt with knowledge of Minitab Software.
    • Experience with developing/documenting procedures. Use of Quality Engineering methods in inspection
    • Must be familiar with a wide range of reliability, environmental, and qualification programs
    • The ability to monitor effectiveness of quality programs as well as development reports and implement corrective action programs on an as needed basis.
    • Assertiveness and excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
    • Ability to develop and implement structured QA processes, procedures and CTQ measures in a rapidly changing environment
    • Excellent decision-making and interpersonal skills are essential
    • Ability to coordinate with teams across departments and/or cross functional personnel located at multiple facilities.
    • Ability to articulate (verbally & in writing), defend and negotiate Quality expectations with internal and external customers at all levels of management.
    • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and maintain the proper balance between meeting the business needs and managing the available resources.
    • Ability to drive technical and cultural changes where required.
    • International travel necessary.
