Sr. Manager, Packaging Engineering

Purpose of the Role

The Sr. Manager, Packaging Engineering oversees the development, optimization, and implementation of packaging solutions that ensure the safe transport, storage, and handling of products and equipment. This role provides technical leadership for the packaging engineering function, ensuring all solutions meet performance requirements, cost targets, and relevant industry standards and other applicable protocols.

This manager collaborates closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Procurement, Logistics, and customers to deliver effective, innovative, and reliable packaging that supports business objectives throughout the product lifecycle.


Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of packaging engineers.
  • Set priorities, manage workload distribution, and ensure timely delivery of all packaging engineering projects.
  • Sets strategy and aligns strategic objectives to the business and operational strategies.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

2. Packaging Design, Development & Deployment

  • Oversee the design, development and deployment of packaging solutions that provide optimal protection, manufacturability and scale, and cost efficiency.
  • Deployment of uniform packaging designs across internal manufacturing plants and contract manufacturers.
  • Ensure packaging systems comply with relevant standards and other testing requirements.
  • Guide the team in executing performance testing, validation, and analysis to ensure durability and reliability.

3. Customer & Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for packaging‑related discussions with key stakeholders.
  • Understand product requirements and translate them into practical and efficient packaging designs.
  • Support customer programs, as necessary, with technical presentations, design proposals, and issue resolution.

4. Labeling Enhancement, Standardization & Optimization

  • Lead initiative(s) to enhance current labeling development, processes and standardization to meet dynamic business needs.
  • Lead cross-functional initiative to enhance labeling processes, focused on continued trend towards customer-specific labeling requirements, standardized labeling and deployment across internal manufacturing plants and contract manufacturers, and speed of deployment.

5. Cost Optimization & Process Improvement

  • Lead cost‑reduction initiatives through design improvements, material optimization, and process efficiencies.
  • Work with Procurement to identify and evaluate suppliers and cost‑effective materials.
  • Standardize packaging practices and documentation to reduce variability and improve operational efficiency.
  • Partner with Logistics to improve/enhance distribution center packaging & re-packaging needs to ensure proper material supply and processes are provided.

6. Sustainable Packaging Solutions

  • Supports sustainability initiatives, as necessary, set by the business through development of sustainable packaging solutions.

7. Compliance, Documentation & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all packaging designs comply with applicable protocols, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
  • Maintain packaging specifications, test results, and design revisions.
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Quality teams to address issues and support continuous quality improvement.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in packaging engineering, with 3–5 years in a leadership or managerial capacity.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools such as SolidWorks or ArtiosCAD.
  • Strong understanding of packaging industry testing standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to balance functionality, compliance, and cost.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with cross‑functional teams and customers.
